The ending confirms that's what he wanted. You were on the right track of the main male infected being intelligent and wanting the woman back. He was the monster to the "monsters" a boogeyman who kidnapped them in the day and killed them. So the original ending (which is available with thr home release not the theatrical cut) follows the book better. I think this is that case, when you have to read book for proper understanding of movie. I like that there are no typical Zombies in it, but most lovable character was Sam and ending didn't hit much because there was nothing in other characters for me to grab. Imo runtime for this movie is too short for proper character development. I think we should watch more Will Smith movies. If a movie/show is going to have a pet dying in it, it damn well needs to earn it, because its such a played out and shitty trope that you HAVE to make it worth it if you're going to put it in your movie/show. But killing dogs, like you said, is just a really cheap way to make people feel sad. And here's the thing, I am someone who LOVES bad/sad endings for movies/shows, I think there aren't nearly enough of them and writers/directors are way too afraid of not giving the audience a happy or bittersweet ending. I do totally agree with you about the dog dying trope. That said, still a slightly less typical take on a zombie-type movie, so still a fun watch overall. Not because its bad, but because it had the potential to be so much better than it was, so it is disappointing for it to be as it is. The movie I was least excited for this month. He’s such a goated dad for having his real kids in big films like those!!! Yes, that’s why I love me some Will Smith.
